A Buffalo Wild Wings chemical spill leaves one dead and 13 hospitalized after an employee was mopping up chemicals with a cleaning solution.

It’s important to note Before cleaning up any spill it’s important to know what you’re cleaning and proper labels so it doesn’t cause a chemical reaction that can lead to irritated airways, respiratory problems, or burns to skin, eyes, throat, nose, and lungs.

Some gases are created from combined cleaning products that could cause damage to the nervous system, eyes, lungs, skin, liver, kidneys, and even death, this is why every restaurant or business must have an MSDS inventory according to OSHA regulations

Dealing with chemical spills

Immediately alert area occupants and supervisor, and evacuate the area, if necessary.
If there is a fire or medical attention is needed, contact Public Safety at 609-258-3333.
Attend to any people who may be contaminated. Contaminated clothing must be removed immediately and the skin flushed with water for no less than fifteen minutes. Clothing must be laundered before reuse. See First Aid for Chemical Exposures for more information.
If a volatile, flammable material is spilled, immediately warn everyone, control sources of ignition and ventilate the area

In closing while it’s very important as a business owner to make sure that all of your employees are trained properly handling chemicals such as cleaning supplies and any other food and safety protocols.

What should you provide your guests if you’re In the food service industry

Whether you own a restaurant or a franchise there are a couple things you should provide your customers.

A great attitude

This will always be my number one important thing to reply to a customer great customer service great attitude greet them at the door if you can and show them how grateful you are for choosing you.

Clean and safe environment

Your establishment should be clean not just for your employees but your customers as well which means wash your hands rotate your food and clean up after every customer

Bathrooms

While it is mandatory to provide restrooms to your employees your customers are a different story you’re only required to provide restroom if you have seating or 19 or more Customers although if you’re allowing your customers to sit down and eat and you’re not providing a grab and go service it would be more sensible to provide them with the restroom.

Pricing displays

It is imperative that everybody in the restaurant history whether you’re small business or i it is imperative that everybody in the restaurant industry whether you’re a small restaurant or a franchise all prices must be displayed now this seem like common sense except it’s not when you have a self served soda fountain

While some restaurants and franchise give free refills, some do not and if you charge for refills it has to be displayed above the fountain or on the menu board if not then it’s like not having a contact

Consistency

When dealing with customers always be consistent with your terms of service don’t play favorites, use your judgment carefully we all remember Starbucks incident where cops were called on potential customers waiting for their partners,

there was another incident in California where a Starbucks allowed a frequent customer access to the bathroom instead of the potential customer and tried to cover it up by threatening to kick out the person who exposed her mistake she was accused of racism.

Honor discounts and coupons

Some restaurants and franchises offer discounts and coupons for Surrounding business employees As long as they fit the criteria then you have to make sure you and your employees honor the original contract for example There was a case back in 2018 where a restaurant Denies Customer’s Coupon, The customer then recruits his roommate as a secret shopper.

The best way for new business to flourish is to network with surrounding businesses and working with different rewards programs such as Groupon, drop or dosh

deal with dine and dashers

Dine and dasher need to be dealt with there’s a right way to do things and a wrong way here are important things to remember when dealing with dine and dashers Not everybody is a dine and dashers which means you cannot initiate rules based on ethnicity, if you have an habitual offender which you shouldn’t because the first offense can get you banned or arrested then you either call the cops or make sure security escort them out and have surveillance, there of been too many cases where employees or businesses have gotten sued or fired due to suspected racism which is often misconstrued or misunderstood.

if you don’t have what the customer wants at a reasonable price they’re going to go somewhere else.

Last month a sports store in Colorado springs went out of business because the owner stopped selling Nike apparel to boycott Colin Kaepernick Nike endorsement.

The most ironic thing about the Nike ad featuring Colin Kaepernick was the quote Believe in something even if it means sacrificing everything. I sensually this is what Stephen Martin of prime time sports did he believed in something and sacrificed his livelihood

This was equivalent to cutting off your nose to spite your face, he compared it to having a sports store without Nike is like having a grocery store without milk or gas station without any gas, while this realization was slightly accurate he still could have had his cake and ate it too.

Here’s how he could have survived and not sell Nike if he

sold his apparel for less
became a discount sports store
moved to another location.
hire a social media marketer
rebrand his sports store

Nike apparel are expensive for this reason it could’ve still worked out in his favor if he didn’t try to cut off his nose to spite his face.

This same principle applies with everything else if like if you are the only store who sells a product like these delicious Goya beansThen people are going to come to you for those beans if not then you have to give them an incentive for their businesses.

The great part about today’s technology is the communication aspect as a small business or startup is the privilege of social media, email and phone notification you can connect with your customers.

For example on September 14 spectrum had several outages in the northeast granted in some areas outages where caused by Hurricane Florence however in New York weather wasn’t an issue.

However they decided to address everyone individually rather then as a whole this might have been a strategic move on their part, although I believe rather then your customers having to find you for information it’s better as a business to reach out to your consumers it saves time and money.

Thanks to features like social media outlets and notifications on your electronic devices you can seek your customers to inform them of any issues.

24 hours to hell and back Brownstone bistro

In episode three of 24 hours to hell and back we follow a Cajun restaurant in the heart of Los Angeles, the owner Clive jackson who is broken, a man who’s dedicated not just to his work but to his community and family.

His desire to save at risk youth After his only son was robbed of his life while he was waiting for a bus the man held his son in his arms and blamed himself.

He wasn’t only about to lose his business but his family and his relationship with his wife and daughter this place needed saving.

Let’s get down to some of the issues

Subtle issues

Employees on their cellphone while on duty

I am more concerned with guest interaction then employees being on their cell phones

As it Gordon Ramsay sat down the first thing he noticed was No one greeting customers at the front door, staff openly on their cellphone and absolutely no engaging with the customers, they failed to bring out all the food at once and then you have the managers cold demeanor

The wings were cold, they served processed cheese and The presentation of the food was horrendous while the inside the kitchen was a whole different story.

I am all for employees expelling energy while it’s slow so as long as its in a productive manner.

I spent time engaging current and potential customers and guest. I try to entertain the guests waiting online those were some of the best moments.

You can also find other examples at Jekyll and Hyde club a theme restaurant in New York City where waiters and characters engaged in song and dance.

So if you’re the waitstaff and everything that needs to be done is already done be creative and engage guests

Cell phone usage

Do not use your Cellphone in public unless you are reaching out to potential customers if it’s an emergency go to a private location like the bathroom or the break room same as if your eating or smoking

Temperature control

Check the temperature inside freezer if you can’t see your breath or you can still feel your face it’s not that cold enough and you need to check the number on the panel.

With Cooked meat it’s important that you check the temperature do not under cook or over cook food parasites, germs and bacteria are attracted to certain temperatures make sure you read the guide lines.

First in first out When in doubt throw it out

Very important make sure everything is dated where you can see it, do not serve food that’s expired and before you serve food if it’s not something you would give to your family let alone your pet don’t serve it when in doubt throw it out.

The kitchen

Be sure to clean everything before you leave throw out the grease, clean out the vents and trays this could mean the difference between life and death a paycheck or law suit

Passion over paycheck

If you were working and you are not going to give it your best or show your interest for the job then leave.

Pos systems

It is the 20th century we are passed the era of writing by hand you have companies like toast, Presto and touch bistros

Renovate, Revamp and renew

Change the decor, create a new menu and renew your image. Remember Community is important, you’re not in it alone, get rid of dead weight and work with a team (team work makes the dream work)

Lastly take care of yourself and your employees get rid of dead weight

Escape from the bay

It is extremely expensive in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco New York and Chicago. California residents have had to go through extreme lengths Just to pay the rent from living under the stairs, having multiple roommates or RV living. If the rental market isn’t regulated due to unaffordablity then we can end up in another housing bubble resulting in a crash, or people dying as a result of over crowding that’s a serious problem. People are already planning to move away from California to places like Washington, Oregon, Texas and Florida. The average employee is now shelling out more than 30% of their household income forcing them to work three jobs at a time in addition to having makeshift rooms which results fire and health hazards, living further away from their job which results in lateness, stressed induced illness, and health issues such as diabetes, heart disease and death.

rental scams are popping up every day people are posting daily Craigslist rentals or commuter beds and companies like AirBNB only encourages landlords to do the same. The best thing to do is to prevent price gouging is to regulate the rental market to ensure landlords are charging a fair amount for rent by giving tax incentive to landlords and business who work together. In conclusion There’s no reason for anyone to open a gofundme account to pay the bills

Masterpiece cake shop

Today the Supreme Court ruled in favor of masterpiece cake shop owners given them religious freedom to not make a cake for a gay Here are a couple of suggestions

If you’re proud of your principles can you should be proud enough to have a scarlet letter on your door or website stating you do not sell gay wedding cakes because it goes against your religious ideology or at least put your religious affiliation in the title of your bakery
Recommend customers to a secular bakery This way at the same time you’re at least working together with the community and helping other businesses that could use The publicity and money.
If you’re getting married congratulations be sure to call every cake shop or at least post it on Twitter or Facebook to get recommendations for local bakeries
